ITINERARY
1st day Individual arrival in Viterbo
In Viterbo, the ancient Papal seat, you can admire the loggia of the Popes, and meditate in the silence of the enchanting cloister of Santa Maria Nuova, among the oldest churches in the city. Have fun searching the buildings for the symbol of the Lion, the emblem of the city, and toast your way out to the pilgrim’s neighborhood, enjoying the tasty local cuisine. Are you undecided? Try acquacotta, the traditional dish of Tuscia.
2nd day Viterbo – Vetralla, 18 km
The first stage of the journey will lead you to Vetralla, a village in the heart of the ancient Etruscan territory. Upon your arrival, treat yourself to a snack of homemade bread and local extra virgin olive oil, before taking a walk through the alleys of the historic center.
3rd day Vetralla – Sutri, 24 km
Continuing in the green landscape of Lazio you reach Sutri, a small city full of attractions. The Roman amphitheater, completely excavated in the tuff, is a must. Choose whether to sit in the stands or conquer the scene, but when leaving, remember to sign the visitor register: the caretaker cares a lot, and if present he will invite you to do so. Then head to the church of Santa Maria del Parto, whose tuff walls are decorated with well-preserved frescoes. Search among the images for the group of pilgrims, portrayed in prayer with their sticks in their hands.
4th day Sutri – Campagnano, 27 km
From Sutri we continue towards Campagnano: during the journey you will skirt the Monte Gelato waterfalls, where you can stop for a refreshing swim. Through a panoramic road in the Veio natural park you will arrive at the gates of Campagnano. Here you can rest in the Venturi Park, home of a 300-year-old yew tree that locals call “Tree of Death”: but don’t worry, you can lie down in its shade without any danger!
5th day Campagnano – Farnese Island, 22 km
From Campagnano you will continue through the Veio natural park with its wooded hills, thus entering the enchanting Sorbo Valley. Along the way you can admire the sanctuary of the Madonna del Sorbo, but also the historic center of Formello, with its beautiful medieval buildings. Today’s destination is the small village of Isola Farnese, perched on a cliff surrounded by woods and dominated by the Farnese Castle: the visit can be booked via the internet, and offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys.
Day 6 Isola Farnese – Rome, 19 km
Here you are at the last stage that separates you from the Eternal City. Being a metropolis, the last part of the route is unfortunately very busy: the viewpoint of Monte Mario, from which you can finally spot the dome of San Pietro, however, is worth the whole trip, and will quickly make you forget traffic and pollution.
From here you will descend towards St. Peter’s Square, the point of arrival of your journey and of the entire northern Via Francigena. Do not forget a triumphant photo in front of the Basilica, before celebrating the end of the journey, refreshing yourself with lamb, pecorino romano, and maybe a nice husband with cream … you deserve it !.
