Individual travel 5 NIGHTS / 6 DAYS
Since the Middle Ages there are three famous pilgrimage routes: Jerusalem in the Holy Land, Santiago de Compostella in Spain and the Via Francigena towards Rome. The ‘Via di S. Francesco’ is a stretch of the Via Francigena, a path that touches many places related to the life of San Francesco. Every year many pilgrims and trekking lovers from all over the world follow this path, passing hermitages, shrines, secular forests, olive groves and valleys rich in art and history, in this region, the home of San Francesco, where his presence is more intense and everything reminds us of the beloved saint.
Here is proposed the stretch that goes from Assisi to Spoleto. From your hometown, located on a hill dominated by Mount Subasio, in a splendid position on the Umbrian Valley between the courses of Chiascio, Topino and Tescio, you will walk in the splendid Umbrian landscape, so loved by San Francesco, and you will pass through known villages and medieval cities such as Spello, Foligno, Trevi and Spoleto, following the itinerary followed by Francesco on his journey to Rome

ITINERARY
1st day Individual arrival in Assisi
2nd day from Assisi to Spello 16.8 km / 5 hours / difference in altitude: + 885m -954m / maximum height 862m – minimum 298m
Leave Assisi and immediately enter the woods of the Monte Subasio Natural Park. A steep climb will take you to the Eremo delle Carceri, one of the Franciscan places par excellence, where you can grasp “the meaning” of the Saint’s prayers. Originally there was a small oratory and some clay huts here. You can visit the cave where the saint slept and the devil’s hole that reminds us of his temptations. From the Hermitage go down to Spello passing the abbey of San Benedetto with its beautiful 11th century crypt. Spello is perched on a hill and was born as a Roman Castro. Not to be missed is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore with the beautiful Baglioni chapel frescoed by Pinturicchio.
3rd day from Spello to Trevi
19.9 km / 6 hours / difference in altitude: + 656m -370m / maximum height 415m – minimum 231m
We go down to the bottom of the valley and walk to Foligno; in the historic center there is the imposing Cathedral with two Romanesque facades (12th century), the 14th century Trinci palace and the Oratory of the Nunziatella (1494) with a fresco by Perugino. In the church of San Francesco the remains of Blessed Angela are preserved, a Franciscan mystic to whom Francesco appeared in 1285. On the Piazza del Duomo Francesco sold his father’s clothes and his horse, this event is still remembered by the commemorative plaque above the newsstand. Leaving Foligno, the path continues among rows of olive groves, which will accompany you to Trevi. Passing small villages and villages with narrow alleys one last climb will take you to Trevi, which from its high position dominates the valley.
4th day from Trevi to Campello Alto
11.7 km / 3 hours 40 / difference in altitude: + 575m-338m / maximum height 665m– minimum 334m
Today’s itinerary is not very long, but you have to face numerous climbs and descents on the hills covered by olive trees and woods. Go up to an ancient Franciscan hermitage, now a cloistered monastery, go down among the olive groves and uphill reach Campello Alto, a castle built in 921 by Rovero di Champeause, Baron of Burgundy, on top of a hill at 514m a.s.l.
5th day from Campello Alto to Spoleto
15-19 km / 5 or 7 hours / difference in altitude: + 650m -727m / maximum height 665m – minimum 307m
It begins with a descent to resume the Via di San Francesco. In Poreta follow the low path walking among olive groves and with a beautiful view of the Poreta Castle. Go to Osteria where there was once a hotel for pilgrims. A steep climb will take you to upper Bazzano and passing the remains of a castle you will go down to lower Bazzano. After a strenuous climb in the woods you will arrive in Eggi, built on the top of a small hill and with a 14th century castle. A quiet country road will accompany you to Spoleto, the duchy of the Lombards and a proud medieval city with a beautiful cathedral and a castle that dominates the city from above.
