A wonderful tour starting from Genoa, an ancient seaside city, and arriving in La Spezia in the Gulf of Tigullio, passing through the Cinque Terre natural park, among the scents and intense colors of the Ligurian Levant.

The paths, on asphalt with some stretches on dirt roads, also include significant differences in height and some climbs that can be tackled with a good change and a little training.

From Levanto on the 5th day we will visit the 5 Terre (Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore) by sea passing through all five countries;

the return can take place by boat or on foot along the famous Via dell’Amore and then continuing towards Vernazza.

ITINERARY

1st day individual arrival in Genoa.

Genoa, for centuries a crossroads of peoples of the Mediterranean, is one of the ancient maritime republics that rivaled Venice; a trace of the ancient splendor is clearly visible in the marble palaces adorned with frescoes and in elegant churches such as the Cathedral of S. Lorenzo. The other face of Genoa, the popular one, can be found in the streets near the port full of picturesque small shops. If you have time, don’t miss a visit to the Museum of the Sea and the Aquarium.

2nd day Genoa – train to Casella – Scoffera – Lumarzo – Carasco – Chiavari ca. 65 km; difference in altitude 500 m

Today is a day full of emotions: the train will take you to Casella 410 m above sea level; from Casella you climb gently up to the Scoffera pass, then go down narrow streets among the olive trees touching small hamlets such as Lumarzo, the birthplace of Frank Sinatra’s mother. Arrival at the sea in Chiavari along the shady and cool cycle path that runs along the Entella river.

3rd day Chiavari – Val Graveglia – Varese Ligure approx. 65 km, altitude difference 800 m

Challenging stage due to the difference in altitude but without steep climbs. From Chiavari you return to the hinterland passing through the Basilica dei Fieschi, a Romanesque jewel, then take the peaceful Val Graveglia where the Gambatesa manganese mine is located, which can be visited today. Arrival in Varese Ligure, a small village with bright colors and a characteristic circular shape, unique in Liguria.

4th day Varese ligure – Levanto ca. 48 km; difference in altitude 650 m

After yesterday’s efforts, today we descend into the green mountains of the hinterland, dotted with delightful villages reminiscent of the houses of a nativity scene, until we return to the sea in Levanto, an ideal place to take a nice swim in the sea or relax in one of the many characteristic and welcoming places enjoying a good ice cream.

5th day Levanto – Cinque Terre by boat and / or on foot

Day without bike dedicated to the Cinque Terre, a unique territory in the world where the mountain full of terraces drops steeply over the sea, creating an unforgettable scenario. By sea by ferry or, in case of bad weather, by land by train, you will reach the five picturesque villages; we suggest to make a part of the way back on foot along the famous “Via dell’Amore”

6th day Levanto – Cinque Terre – La Spezia approx. 41 km; difference in altitude 350 m

From Levanto you go up to the sanctuary of Soviore, a place of welcome with a beautiful panorama of Monterosso, then continue almost flat along the spectacular road that winds through the mountains allowing you to enjoy the splendid view of the coves and fishing villages visited on day before. Breathtaking descent on La Spezia, military port where there is an interesting naval museum. Opportunity to reach Portovenere by bus or bike but on a busy road.

7th day La Spezia,

end of services after breakfast For the return to Genoa, the train is recommended, approximately 1 hour journey.
